This weekend, 20-year-old Ashley Kemete was shot dead on his doorstep in south London - the latest young victim of violent crime.
Police have declined to comment on claims that this latest case involved a feud between rival gangs, but gang warfare is increasingly a factor in such cases, presenting particular problems for the police.
Often the key to a murder investigation may be held by young gang members or their friends, and the police have a battle on their hands to win their trust, as Girish Juneja reports.
