Diana: death by driver and paparazzi

Updated on 07 April 2008

By Sue Turton

Diana died because of a drunk driver and the speed of the pursuing paparazzi.

At the end of an inquest that has lasted six months a jury decided that Diana Princess of Wales and Dodi al Fayed were unlawfully killed when their car crashed in Paris in August 1997.

Their driver Henri Paul was ruled to be grossly negligent, as were the pack of photographers who'd followed them into the Alma Tunnel.

Speaking outside court the former Metropolitan Police Commissioner Lord Stephens said he hoped the decision would now bring "closure".
