Women phone hotline over HIV alert
Updated on 02 December 2008
More than 100 women phoned health hotlines after an HIV patient told doctors he frequently had unprotected sex with partners he met at clubs, the Health Protection Agency said.
Last month, the agency launched an appeal for women to come forward if they slept with a man they had met at either the now-closed After Dark Club or the private Burlington Club, both in Leicester, between 2002 and last year.
The organisation feared the number at risk could reach into three figures.
Since then, 103 women have called NHS Direct and Health Protection Agency East Midlands.
The total number to come forward so far could be higher, said the agency, because others may have visited local sexual health clinics or family planning clinics.
Health Protection Agency East Midlands consultant, Dr Philip Monk, said: "We have had 58 members of the public ring the NHS Direct number and 45 other people who rang us direct.
"There have been a range of concerns from people wanting to find out more to others wanting reassurance.
"It has also been an important way for us to keep the issue of Aids and HIV in the public's mind."
Health bosses also wrote to more than 400 women the man may have encountered at a mental health unit in Leicestershire after he admitted having sex with a number he met there.
