Two new foot and mouth probes

By Tom Clarke

Updated on 14 August 2007

Two cases are being investigated - one far away from the confirmed outbreak in Surrey and the other at Chessington World of Adventure's children's zoo

Control zones have today been established around two more farms following fears of new suspected outbreaks of foot and mouth disease. Both are outside the area previously infected in Surrey.

DEFRA say that results from tests on a farm in Kent are expected this evening or early tomorrow after they has been told that some calves had unusual lesions on their mouths.

Channel 4 News has learned that a temporary control zone has been set up, outside the existing Surveillance Zone at Pirbright, at Chessington World of Adventures after suspicions were raised about an animal in the Childrens Petting Zoo.

A three-kilometre exclusion zone has also been set up around the site north of New Romney. Watch the report from the site with our Science Correspondent Tom Clarke.
