A leading expert on gender identity disorder has been found guilty of serious professional misconduct but has avoided being struck off for rushing patients into hormone treatment and sex change surgery.

A General Medical Council hearing in London on Monday found consultant psychiatrist Dr Russell Reid had acted inappropriately and not in the best interests of five transgender patients.

But panel chair John Shaw told Dr Reid, who is now retired but has said he might return to practise: "The panel does not think it would be in the public interest to deprive the country of an experienced and otherwise well-respected doctor."

Instead, Dr Reid was told he can continue to practise under strict conditions, including that he be supervised in the NHS hospitals or GMC-approved clinics he works in.
