Quick eating 'leads to weight gain'

Bolting down food helps to treble the risk of being overweight, it was claimed.

New research suggests that a combination of eating quickly and eating until full can really pile on the pounds.

Scientists gave more than 3,000 Japanese men and women aged 30 to 69 diet history questionnaires asking them about their eating habits.

Around half of the men and almost 60% of the women said they ate until they were full.

Just under half (45.6%) of men and 36% of women confessed to eating in a hurry.

Participants who did both had a higher body mass index (BMI) - a measurement relating height and weight - and total calorie intake than those who did neither.

Both men and women who were guilty of "eating until full and eating quickly" were three times more likely to be overweight than people outside this group.

The scientists, led by Professor Hiroyasu Iso, from Osaka University in Japan, wrote in an early online edition of the British Medical Journal: "Eating until full and eating quickly were associated with being overweight in Japanese men and women, and the combination of the two eating behaviours may have a substantial impact on being overweight."
