No approval for kidney cancer drugs deemed non cost-effective by Nice

Updated on 07 August 2008

By Channel 4 News

Nice, the body which approves drugs for use in the NHS, refuses to fund four new kidney drugs.

If they had been cheaper, however, they might have been approved.

As the drugs cost £20-30,000 per patient per year and only extend life by five to six months they were not deemed cost effective.

The decision has angered patients and some cancer experts who say it leaves them with few options for treatment.
