Maternity services 'inadequate'

Women are being failed by inadequate maternity services in England, a report by the healthcare commission has concluded.

Too many women are being failed by inadequate maternity services in England as well as by a lack of key staff, a hardhitting report by the healthcare commission has concluded.

The commission found huge differences in the quality of ante and post-natal care between different trusts, with services in London deemed the most poor.

As well as highlighting the shortage of midwives, the independent report also found 40 per cent of ultrasound scans failed to fully check for abnormalities in unborn babies.
