Mars in talks over vegetarian logo
Updated on 10 June 2007
Mars is in talks with the Vegetarian Society over using the green "V" logo on its chocolate packaging.
It follows the firm's recent U-turn over the use of animal products in its confectionery.
The Vegetarian Society welcomed Mars' interest in its accreditation scheme, but said some long-term vegetarians may not back the green logo appearing on chocolate bars.
Mars last month announced plans to use whey with traces of animal rennet in some chocolate and ice cream.
Outcry from vegetarians forced the firm to revert back to its previous recipe.
The company also published a series of full-page newspaper advertisements apologising for planning to use rennet.
The Vegetarian Society's green "V" logo does not currently appear on any major chocolate brands.
Information manager Chris Olivant welcomed Mars' interest in getting accredited by the society, but said some within the group may believe they should concentrate on promoting healthy food.
"But you have to try to make vegetarianism easy for everyone to stick to," he added.
Mars told trade magazine The Grocer: "We are in dialogue with the Vegetarian Society and have had a meeting at our facilities in Slough to discuss the criteria for accreditation."
