Holidaymakers turn into risk-takers

Many Britons still take the "sex, sun and sangria" approach to foreign holidays, according to a poll.

All-day drinking, serious sunburn and having holiday romances are high on the list of risks UK travellers expose themselves to abroad, the survey by travelsupermarket.com found.

As many as a third of 2,003 adults polled said they were more likely to take risks while away on holiday than at home.

The main reason for this was a mixture of alcohol, sun and a holiday atmosphere, while some claimed they felt they could do whatever they liked while on a foreign break.

Men (37%) were more likely than women (29%) to act foolishly when away, with those under 30 most prepared to take risks.

Also, 12% of 18- to 29-year-olds have had unprotected sex while on holiday and 14% of all Britons have not worn car seatbelts while abroad.

Bob Atkinson, of travelsupermarket.com, said: "It's not hugely surprising that many holidaymakers are a bit more relaxed about things on holiday - it's usually why people go away in the first place.

"However, they do need to be very careful and think about what they're doing and, more importantly, the impact this could have on their holiday.

"Risking your health by drinking too much alcohol and not enough water, or staying out in the sun too long is one thing, but putting personal safety and security on the line could put holidaymakers in danger - and on the wrong side of the law."
