Decision on cholesterol screening

By Keme Nzerem

Updated on 15 December 2007

The HFEA is considering granting a licence to screen embryos for a gene that causes high cholesterol levels

The gene in question also produces an increased risk of heart attacks in children.

The fertility watchdog will announce next week whether or not it has approved an application to carry out tests for familial hyper-cholesterol-aemia.

A British couple who have a daughter with the disease fear any other children they have could also be affected.
