China says contaminated milk leaving more babies sick than first thought
Updated on 17 September 2008
China's health minister admits more than 6,000 children are ill after consuming milk containing melamine.
The number of babies hit by the contaminated milk is five times that previously admitted by the government.
The company that produced the milk has recalled supplies, but it has been accused of being too slow to take action.
It is not the first time that melamine, which is usually used in plastics, fertilisers and cleaning agents, has been found in other Chinese products.
