Boots open drive-through pharmacy

A former McDonald's restaurant has been turned into Britain's first drive-through pharmacy.

The branch has been taken over by Boots and allows customers to drive up to a window, hand in a prescription and pick up medication from a collection point.

Boots hopes the drive-through will appeal to mothers with children who do not want to leave their car and commuters who need their prescription quickly.

The stores could be introduced across the UK if the pilot in Colchester, Essex, proves a success.

The branch, which opened on Wednesday, is attached to a conventional walk-in Boots store selling the usual range of toiletries, cosmetics and snacks.

Boots said drive-through pharmacies have been widespread in the US for years.

Boots healthcare director Tricia Kennerly said: "If this store proves as popular as we expect, we would consider other potential sites.

"This ensures that Boots continues to move with the times, giving customers exactly what they need."
