Bird flu confirmed
Updated on 13 November 2007
Poultry farmers across the country have been put on alert after officials confirmed the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu on a farm in East Anglia.
Defra scientists are trying to contain the disease and find its source.
The government stressed there was no risk to human health from eating properly cooked poultry or eggs. Tonight six and a half thousand birds including turkeys, ducks and geese are being culled.
10 km Surveillance Zone has been imposed. A wider restricted zone has been set up, covering much of Norfolk and the whole of Suffolk. No poultry can be moved out of the zones and all birds must be kept indoors.
