Arts therapy to tackle dementia
Updated on 17 March 2009
Nicholas Glass reports on a radical alternative to traditional dementia treatment about to be trialled by one of the country's biggest care providers.
It uses arts-based therapy to reach the creative and emotional parts of the brain, which are believed to remain largely intact in dementia sufferers.
According to a new nationwide report, currently patients in care homes are often controlled unnecessarily through anti-psychotic drugs, because the staff is under-trained.
More than 700,000 people in Britain live with dementia.
