Alert over energy drink 'addiction'
Updated on 03 September 2008
School nurses have been warned to be on the lookout for signs of caffeine addiction among children, it has been reported.
Pupils are consuming more high energy drinks, which is causing a growing problem in schools, according to Bob Tait of Drug Education UK.
He told an Royal College of Nursing conference for independent school nurses: "Children will drink them on the walk to school, at break and lunch time. If you have got a child who is worked up on an energy drink, they are going to be agitated during lesson time."
Mr Tait said nurses should be alert for children complaining of symptoms such as chest pains, headaches, restlessness or sleeplessness, the Nursing Standard journal reported.
He added: "If they come to you with these complaints, be aware that there may be a caffeine problem at the bottom of it."
