The xenophobia under the surface of Russian society has been thrust into the spotlight by recent events - such as the police raids on Georgians that we reported on a week ago.
But in parts of Russia, hostility to non-Russians has now given rise to a rash of vicious racist attacks by neo-Nazi skinhead gangs - with the police accused of doing nothing to stop them.
