In a brief statement to the Commons, Environment Secretary Hilary Benn warned of potentially serious flooding over the next 48 hours.

Police are on standby in the areas most likely to be affected, including Norfolk and Suffolk, to co-ordinate the emergency response, including evacuation if necessary, he said.

The situation tonight, an Environment Agency spokesman told Channel 4 News, is similar to 1953.

Then 307 people died in the floods that devastated East Anglia, over a thousand in the Netherlands.

Tonight the same combination of tide, storm and weather has led to six Severe Flood Warnings.

Officially that means flooding is expected and there is imminent danger to life and property.

Suffolk County Council is already advising people living near the sea in some areas to evacuate their homes and it has set up rest centres in Lowestoft.

In Holland. the port of Rotterdam will suspend all harbour traffic within the hour.

It is the largest port in Europe. Its flood protection barrier is to be raised for the first time in earnest. The whole of Holland on the highest weather alert for 30 years.

Tonight, the emergency services can only watch and wait.
