People still alive in China rubble

Updated on 16 May 2008

By Alex Thomson

In China people are still being pulled from the rubble alive four days after the earthquake.

One of the success stories is that of a 54-year old man dug out from a chemical factory in Shirfang.

Rescue efforts have been hampered by a total of 4,432 tremors and aftershocks since Monday.

In Sichuan and neighbouring Chongqing dozens of dams have cracked or are leaking water, causing major concern as authorities try to assess the risk.

There are extremely distressing scenes throughout this report by uur chief correspondent Alex Thomson.

Our China Correspondent Lindsey Hilsum travelled from the provincial capital Chengdu, north through Mianyang to one of the worst affected counties, Beichuan.

Travelling on foot, she has now reached the town of Luoshui.

Ashley Howlett, a lawyer based in China who specialises in construction and engineering, talks to Jon Snow about whether the Chinese had building regulations specifically designed to guard against earthquakes.
