Voters across Greater Manchester overwhelmingly rejected plans to introduce a congestion charge zone in the region to help pay for improved public transport.
They had been told it would mean better trains, buses and trams and billions of pounds of investment for local transport.
But proposals to charge motorists up to £5 a day to drive in peak hours were rejected in a referendum by a four-to-one majority.
