It's one of the world's biggest schemes to combat climate change. Now Channel 4 News has uncovered the first direct evidence that it may not be working as planned.
The Clean Development Mechanism allows rich countries to pay developing nations to cut their emissions, reducing their own carbon footprint.
But an investigation by this programe has discovered problems with the deals British companies are making.
Some of the schemes may not be adding to global cuts in emissions. And in other cases they may actually be damaging the local environment.
