Hurricane Gustav has hit a deserted US Gulf coast but delivered only a glancing blow to New Orleans before weakening and heading inland.

Officials say New Orleans has escaped the worst of hurricane Gustav after its rebuilt levees appeared to hold off the flooding that had been predicted.

It's still deserted - but largely unscathed.

But the city's mayor has advised the two million residents who evacuated ahead of the hurricane's arrival to stay away for at least another day.

And forecasters are now warning of a new tropical depression forming in the Atlantic.
