Court acquits six after chimney protest at Kingsnorth power station

Updated on 10 September 2008

By Julian Rush

A court acquits six Greenpeace activists of criminal damage following their climate change protest at Kingsnorth power station in Kent.

The protesters managed to scale a 650-foot chimney and paint the name Gordon on it before being arrested.

The jury had been asked by the judge to consider if the demonstrators had a lawful excuse for their actions, which were a protest against the redevelopment of Kingsnorth as a coal-burning plant.

The protesters said their motivation was preventing damaging emissions.
