Controversy over 260-year-old treasure
Updated on 03 February 2009
More4 News investigates as an American company discovers the wreck of the HMS Victory and controversially aims to bring up her treasure.
Almost 1,000 British sailors were lost with the ship, as was four tonnes of gold coins and, for 260 years, the wreck has lain undisturbed at the bottom of the English Channel.
It was the pride of the Royal Navy at the time, the world's most powerful fighting force, but a fierce storm in 1744 led to the sinking of HMS Victory.
The name was later reused for Lord Nelson's flagship.
David Fuller reports.
