MPs want huge tax hikes on gas-guzzling cars so people will buy environmentally friendly vehicles.

A group of MPs says drastic action is needed and attempts to cut car emissions are moving too slowly.

The environmental audit committee wants a much more ambitious reform of the car tax system, with bigger differences between bands for different sized cars.

But the issue was divisive even within the committee, with a group of MPs submitting a minority report in rebellion.
