New scheme for social mobility

Poorly performing schools will have to find half of the £10,000 "golden handshake" for better teachers out of existing budgets.

Teaching bodies cautiously welcomed the announcement, designed attract the best teachers to the worst schools for a minimum of three years

The government New Opportunities white paper, which is designed to increase the chances of those from poorer backgrounds by improving social mobility, and which hasn't changed for 30 years, includes extra cash for childcare and the creation of 35,000 new apprenticeship places.
