Universities should not bar the way to students who have rebuilt their lives after criminal convictions, the higher education minister tells Channel 4 News.
Talking to Channel 4 News at Noon about the case of Majid Ahmed, the Bradford student refused a place to study medicine at Imperial College London after he disclosed a spent conviction for burglary, Bill Rammell said -
"Any young person who has a spent conviction... and then has gone everything that society would ask of him in rebuilding and repairing his life... university should be open for people like these."
Mr Rammell went on: "This case does raise concerns and it reinforces my view that we need greater openness and transparency and accountability in university admissions decisions."
Mr Ahmed, who received four A grade A-levels, already has the support of his local MP and the shadow education secretary.
