Climbers say the deaths of 11 people on K2 represent one of the blackest periods for mountaineering.

Most of the mountaineers died when a wall of ice collapsed as they descended from the summit.

Several were crushed, and others were left stranded as ropes they had planned to use for the descent were swept away.

Experienced mountaineers say this is one of the blackest periods they have known.
