Bhutto ultimatum to Musharraf

By Lindsey Hilsum

Updated on 07 November 2007

Benazir Bhutto urges Pakistanis to demonstrate to force President Musharraf to hold elections.

The brittle truce between Pakistan's President Musharraf and the former prime minister Benazir Bhutto is apparently over.

Today Bhutto gave the president a week to commit to holding elections and resign from the army before she urged Pakistanis to join her on a long march from Lahore to the capital, Islamabad.

But with demonstrations banned under the current state of emergency laws, once again on the streets riot police have beaten and arrested protestors.

Here, the foreign secretary said the president must resign as head of the army, but there was no "or else" to go with it.
