Woman sees porn on new mobile phone

A mother said she was "stunned" to discover pornography on a new mobile phone she bought at Woolworths.

Sandra Bamlet, from Darlington, was taking pictures of her dogs with her new Samsung handset when she came across the graphic images.

The 59-year-old had bought the phone for £39.99 at the Woolworths store in Northgate, Darlington and was surprised to find it was already fitted with a SIM card.

The electronics company Samsung said they would replace the phone and launch an inquiry to find out how the images got there.

Mrs Bamlet said: "I was stunned, actually. It was just a phone I opened as brand new. I was taking pictures of the dogs and they just came up. I'm not really into mobiles. It was just a little cheap one - I don't like advanced ones."

She said the phone showed pictures of couples having sex and several self-portraits of a naked man. The man could be seen naked from the waist up, taking pictures of himself, and lying half naked on a bed, smiling. There was also a close up of his genitals, as well as photographs taken from a pornography magazine, she said.

Mrs Bamlet said her nieces, aged 10 and 14, could easily have come across the images on the phone.

She said: "Young kids buy mobiles at that price regularly and it could be on other ones, that's the thing. I do hope that it's a one off. I thought it was a new phone but it obviously wasn't. Samsung said they would offer a new phone to me."

A spokeswoman for Woolworths said: "We are sorry to hear that Mrs Bamlet had an unsatisfactory experience with her mobile phone. A full refund was offered and we believed she was happy with this arrangement and was going to follow up further with Samsung."

Samsung was unavailable for comment but a spokeswoman told the Northern Echo newspaper: "We are shocked to hear that this has happened, and will urgently investigate how it could possibly have occurred."
