Web pirates fined and jailed

Updated on 17 April 2009

By Benjamin Cohen

The men behind one of the world's most popular file-sharing websites are sentenced to a year in jail by a Swedish court.

The four men who run Pirate Bay have also been ordered to pay almost £3m in damages.

It is a test case that could lead to music and film companies being able to recoup millions of dollars in revenues lost through illegal downloads.

Pirate Bay offers links to free downloads of films, and music, but it doesn't store the material.
