UK embroiled in cyber war

By Channel 4 News

Updated on 05 September 2007

Has the Cold War with the Russian bear been replaced by a 21st century cyber war with the Chinese dargon?

It's being reported that British government departments, including the Foreign Office, have come under sustained attack from Chinese hackers.

China has officially denied responsibility and rejects claims that hackers controlled by its military are responsible for the security breaches.

But Britain is not the only government to come under bombardment from cyber warriors. It's understood that a Pentagon military computer network was penetrated by hackers in June.

And German Chancellor Angela Merkel is reported to have raised the issue of Chinese attacks on her government's computers during a recent visit to Beijing.

Joining us in the studio is Alexander Neill, Head of the Asia Security Programme at the Royal United Services Institute.
