The gagging of the Night Jack blogger

In the age of the blogger and tweeter as hero in Iran, why are we gagging an award-winning policeman blogger here in Britain? Stephanie West reports.

In a week when bloggers have managed to reveal the unrest in Iran to the outside world, here in the UK a landmark ruling has silenced a senior detective who had appealed for his anonymity to be protected.

Night Jack's blogs about life in the police force won him a cult following and the Orwell Prize but this week a judge allowed The Times to reveal his name.

To keep his job and his sources secret, he has had to keep quiet, and all traces of his blog have been erased.
