Stylophone organ making a comeback

Retro-mania has prompted the return of the Stylophone device to a UK chain.

HMV is bringing back the battery-run pocket organ as part of the 1970s revival.

The gadget sounds different notes when its keys are touched with a stylus.

Unlike its predecessor, the modern version comes with volume control and an MP3 music player function.

The Stylophone was taken out of UK stores shortly after production of the instrument stopped in the early 1980s, according to HMV.

Since then only reconditioned devices have been available, the chain said.

HMV entertainment products buyer Fran Jones said: "We always find there's a massive response from our customers every time HMV sells a classic retro item from the Seventies or Eighties, so I suspect these Stylophones are going to sell pretty quickly."

Several of the old-style gadgets are currently up for sale on the eBay auction site. The new Stylophones go on sale at HMV stores on Friday.
