Solar-powered sales go sky high

Updated on 04 September 2007

Despite gloomy skies putting a dampener on the British summer, solar-powered goods have seen a surge in popularity.

Electronics retailer Maplin reported that sales of items that run on the sun's energy are up by 156% on last summer.

May proved to be the most successful month for solar panel technology, with transactions up 511% year-on-year.

Battery chargers topped the list of best-selling solar-powered gadgets, followed by garden lights and a solar briefcase, Maplin said.

Maplin marketing director David O'Reilly said: "The increase in sales of solar technology despite the onslaught of wet weather is proof that people are beginning to realise it doesn't have to be sunny to reap the benefits of solar panel."

He added: "Techno-savvy shoppers are beginning to realise they can all do their little bit for the environment and many are reducing their carbon footprint by swapping everyday gadgets and appliances for solar-powered alternatives, which are now more easy to use and affordable than ever."
