Smoke alarm 'most important gadget'

The smoke alarm was rated most important gadget in a new poll.

This month marks the 40th anniversary of the battery-operated domestic smoke alarm, patented by two American inventors in 1969.

A new series of television adverts urging people to check their smoke alarms will run throughout January. The Pull Your Finger Out ads, fronted by Julie Walters, show the horrific aftermath of a fire in the home.

Government fire minister Sadiq Khan said: "As this research shows, the advent of the smoke alarm has been one of the most important technological events in recent years.

"By giving people those precious minutes to escape from fire, the working smoke alarm has saved countless lives over the years.

"Owning a smoke alarm is not enough though - test yours weekly to ensure it remains your potential lifeline for future years to come."

Of the 2,584 adults in England surveyed for the Department of Communities and Local Government's Fire Kills campaign, 69% rated the smoke alarm their most important gadget, 64% the seat belt and 29% the baby seat.

The airbag came fourth in the poll with 28%, while the cycle helmet came ninth with 13%.
