New ATM allows more bill payments
Updated on 07 May 2008
A new-style cash machine which will enable consumers to top up payment cards and pay bills has been unveiled.
ATM manufacturer NCR Corporation said its next generation machine would enable people to top-up travel cards and contactless payment cards, as well as pay their utility bills and deposit cash and cheques.
The NCR SelfServ ATM has also been designed to be more environmentally friendly, featuring energy saving technology and smaller receipts, which are printed on both sides.
The group said it had received a lot of interest from firms in the UK.
NCR said it had expanded the range of services people could carry out at an ATM following the popularity of mobile phone top-ups at cash machines.
It said around 1.6 million mobile phone top-ups were carried out on UK ATMs in 2006, although just 46% of machines offered the service.
Its new ATMs will enable consumers to pay utility bills simply by scanning the barcode on their bill and requesting a transfer.
The group said the machine can also restart itself if their is a fault, reducing the need for an engineer to be called out, and cutting the time it is offline for from around three to four hours to just 10 to 15 minutes.
It added that with the machines conserving energy and paper and requiring fewer engineering call outs, they had a significantly reduced carbon footprint.
Rachel Nash, head of UK operations at NCR, said: "Due to concerns about the credit crunch, UK consumers are avoiding the temptation of spending money they haven't got by paying by cash. NCR SelfServ is designed to enable consumers to withdraw cash, make deposits, top-up mobile and contactless cards, pay bills and more with ease."
