German scientists say they are close to cracking the Neanderthal genetic code.

In evolutionary terms they were close cousins that co-existed with our ancestors for at least 10,000 years.
Yet despite being the more robustly built, Neanderthals eventually became extinct.
Now scientists in Germany say they're close to cracking the Neanderthal genetic code for the first time.
