Institute builds 'fastest drill'

Updated on 15 November 2008

A renowned Swiss scientific institute says it has built a drill that spins at least twice as fast as any motor currently in existence.

The Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich says the matchbox-sized device uses custom-made electronics and a new combination of metals to achieve a million rotations per minute.

Researcher Christof Zwyssig said the engine will allow them to drill holes narrower than the width of a human hair.

He and fellow postgraduate researcher Martin Bartholet are marketing their device to the electronics industry.

Institute faculty and students have won 21 Nobel prizes.
