How smart are smart meters?

Energy regulator Ofgem says there is “no evidence” that the government’s device for cutting domestic energy consumption actually reduces utility use.

A smart meter in every home by 2020.  That is the government's plan for cutting domestic energy consumption.

But the energy regulator Ofgem, which has been running trials of the technology since September last year, has told Channel 4 News that the results show "no evidence that people are reducing their energy use". 

Both Ofgem and the government insist it is too early to draw conclusions and say there is other evidence that smart meters do indeed bring energy use down
