How first artificial reef in Europe will create bigger waves in Dorset

Updated on 29 August 2008

By Julian Rush

Britannia will be able to rule the waves again after work began today on laying Europe's first artificial surf reef on the seabed off the Dorset coast.

The first section of the reef, made up of sandbags and webbing, was carried 225 metres out to sea east of Boscombe pier.

When work is completed, the reef is expected to become a draw for surfers, with waves increased in size from knee to head height.
