Good golly Almasty

Updated on 17 June 2008

By Rags Martel

Did human beings interbreed with Neanderthal man? A new scientific expedition aims to prove that in Russia they did.

You've heard of the yeti, the abominable snowman, bigfoot, now meet the Almasty.

That's a mysterious ape-like being reputed to live in a remote part of Russia. A team of British zoologists thinks they could be surviving Neanderthal men.

Other scientists, backing the expedition, say they're not sure about the Almasty but they do think the trip could reveal genetic information about humans interbreeding with Neanderthals thousands of years ago.
