What is Twitter?

Twitter is often described as a micro-blogging service because it restricts posts to 140 characters - in other words, a length similar to a mobile text message.

Updates can be made via the web, by SMS (short message service, aka text meassaging), via an instant messaging service or through a third-party such as Facebook.

The creators of Twitter argue that the most interesting things that happen to you - or rather the things you think you and a close network of friends might be interested in - happen away from your computer. Hence, they hope, the popularity of micro-blogging.
