The announcement followed a warning from US health chiefs that deaths were likely as the disease continues to spread.

The French government is to ask for a suspension of all European flights to and from Mexico and the latest European country to declare a confirmed case of the flu is Germany, bringing the number infected in Europe to five.

The epicentre, Mexico, has only 26 confirmed cases but an estimated 2500 suspected cases and 159 people are thought to have died from the virus.

Sarah Smith reports from Mexico City.
