Digital Britain: your views

By Benjamin Cohen

Updated on 29 January 2009

Off to Digital Britain briefing armed with a trusty pen and paper as no laptops or BlackBerrys allowed, writes Ben Cohen.

Ironic isn't it?

I guess they should have held the briefing in Brownwydd, where I visited last week.

Aside from no freeview the community lacks broadband or a mobile signal.

Find out about life there on Channel 4 News at noon.

"Like many other rural businesses we have huge problems with broadband speeds because BT refuse to upgrade their exchange."
David

Some of your broadband experiences

"I do not know whether it is worth public money to give us all faster broadband, in the present circumstances probably not as there are greater priorities."

Margaret

"While no friend of ISPs, the fact is broadband packages are offered at "up to X Mb/s".

"The copper telephone wires to people's houses were never built to transmit anything like this amount of data and the quality of your line (and the internal wiring in your house) has a very large impact on the speed you can achieve."

Robin

"I should receive speeds up to 20mb according to my provider and the advertised claims. Never have done.

"I do think that we need to invest in a better infrastructure for internet connections, after all much of our continued success or failure as a nation will depend on communications, information and knowledge sharing in this largely digitally global 'village' that is the internet."

Miriam

"We run a small but successful business from a rural location. Like many other rural businesses we have huge problems with broadband speeds because BT refuse to upgrade their exchange.

We would like to expand and take on more staff but unless we move, which we are unwilling to do, we cannot because our business is internet based." David

"Surely a nationwide upgrade of connections is an essential tool to ensure continued productivity and competitiveness for UK business? Such an upgrade would certainly be a good use of public money."

Andy
