Climate change: does first world hold answer?

By Channel 4 News

Updated on 30 November 2009

A major challenge from one of the leaders of the developing world: can the developed world come up with an answer that works? Alex Thomson reports.

Copenhagen climate change summit

Climate Change Secretary Ed Miliband joined Alex Thomson from Lambeth in south London.

Mr Miliband said told Channel 4 News: "Brazil has come forward with ambitious reductions in its own emissions, reductions in the growth of its emissions.

"We need to come forward with the finance that will make possible both preservation of the forests, which is essential, and help for the people you are meeting in Brazil."

Alex Thomson was also joined by two Brazilians who from different perspectives have been following the world's long road to Copenhagen. Raquel Rolnik is the United Nations' special rapporteur for adequate housing, and William Waack is one of Latin America's most eminent journalists.

Mr Waack said: "I think Lula is trying to put himself in the middle of the road. He is trying to be a world leader. But domestically we still have a long way to go."
