Carjack detector wins award

A new anti-carjacker sensor, which can alert a driver that someone is hiding in their vehicle, has been unveiled.

The Personal Car Communicator, from manufacturer Volvo, sends a signal to the driver's key fob.

The device helped Volvo to win an innovation award at the British Insurance Car Security Awards hosted by Berkshire-based Thatcham motor insurance repair research centre.

Thatcham said there was anecdotal evidence that car criminals were turning to other ways of making off with vehicles now that it is virtually impossible to drive off without a key.

The second of two innovation awards went to Citroen for a system which allows for rapid vehicle identification by law enforcement agencies.

Thatcham chief executive Peter Roberts said: "Manufacturers are continuing to keep ahead of the criminal fraternity - committing resources to the development of highly sophisticated systems to keep cars secure.

"Many car thieves are just having to give up - thanks to the industry's continued quest to drive down car crime."
