Apple set to unveil new iPhone

Updated on 08 June 2009

Apple is expected to unveil the next generation of its iPhone in a move eagerly awaited by gadget lovers.

The announcement is due to be made by Philip Schiller, a senior vice president at the firm, at The Worldwide Developers Conference in California at around 6pm BST.

Speculation has it that the new updated phone could see its memory doubled - allowing for up to 7,000 songs to be stored. Others have suggested that it will come with a camera that will allow for two-way video calls.

Apple has kept quiet about the latest developments, not saying what will be announced during the conference.

But any new iPhone will be seen as Apple's retalliation to one of its main rivals, Palm.

Over the weekend, the new Palm Pre went on sale in the US.

It has impressed reviewers with its slide-out keyboard and ability to run more than one programme at a time. But with the new iPhone being launched, it may not be enough to dent Apple's market share.

The importance placed on the announcement by Apple has sparked rumours that chief executive Steve Jobs, who is currently on medical leave, may attend the conference.

Mr Jobs has taken a less high-profile role in the firm since suffering with a hormonal imbalance that has left him looking frail.
