The unthinkable scene

Martin McGuinness stands shoulder to shoulder with the chief constable of Northern Ireland for the first time, in the wake of three brutal murders.

"Northern Ireland's deputy first minister wasted no time denouncing the killing of policeman Stephen Carroll in Craigavon. He said those behind the shooting were traitors to the island of Ireland.

Politicians from all sides have come together to condemn the attack. But will peace in Northern Ireland manage to prevail?

Police are questioning a 17-year-old and a 37-year-old man in connection with the murder.

The constable was shot from behind by a single bullet as he got out of his car, in what police described as a "deliberate set-up".

The republican splinter group the Continuity IRA claims it is responsible.
