Updated on 15 December 2007

By Jonathan Miller

If Jacob Zuma wins control of the ANC, he will be on track to succeed Thabo Mbeki as South African president.

He has been acquitted of raping a family friend and could face corruption charges.

Controversy is never far away from Jacob Zuma, who is expected to win control of the governing ANC at a party conference in South Africa starting tomorrow.

But the former archbishop of Cape Town, Desmond Tutu, has said Mr Zuma should not be chosen.

Zuma interview by Paul Martin, World News & Features.
